IDL Activities

Event: S1 World War 1 IDL week
Date:14th -18th December 2015

All S1 pupils took part in a week of activities all related to WW1. Across departments, pupils experienced activities that enhanced their knowledge of the war itself but also helped them understand the impact the war had on people and the impact it still has. Pupils used their learning from one curricular area and applied it other areas to deepen their understanding of this topic.

Pupils were involved in a range of activities including coding lessons, making a periscope, writing letters form the trenches, WW1 song writing, war diaries and many more activities.

In Science pupils learned about the role Science played in WW1. This included lessons on chemicals in flares, chemical warfare, injuries and first aid.

In Home Economics, pupils worked together to plan meals using basic wartime rations.

In Art, they produced art work related to the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’.

All S1 pupils had the opportunity to visit the Mobile Military museum during the week.

Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Here are some of their thoughts:

“It made me think twice about what I want to do in the future.”

“It was cool to see how different subjects linked together.”

“It was fun and helped my learning.”
