Courses: S3, National 4 and 5, Higher and AH

S3:

The S3 chemistry course is based upon the Experiences and Outcomes of levels 3 and 4 of Curriculum for Excellence. The concepts covered over S3 provide the basis for study of Chemistry at National 4 and 5 levels in S4.

National 4 and 5:

This exciting course in Chemistry covers three main subject areas:
Chemical Changes and Structure

The general aim of this Unit is to develop skills of scientific inquiry, investigation, analytical thinking and knowledge and understanding of chemical changes and structure. The key areas covered are rates of reaction, atomic structure, energy, chemical reactions and acids and bases.

Nature’s Chemistry

This unit will consider the applications of nature’s chemistry on our lives, as well as the implications on society/the environment. The key areas covered are fuels, hydrocarbons, everyday consumer products and plants to products.

Chemistry in Society

This unit will consider the applications of chemistry in society on our lives, as well as the implications on society/the environment. The key areas covered are metals and alloys, materials, fertilisers, nuclear chemistry and chemical analysis.

How will the course be assessed?

The National 4 course is internally assessed and will include a research project as part of the final assessment.

The National 5 course is assessed by a mixture of internal assessment including an assignment and a final external exam in May.

Higher:

The Higher Chemistry course allows the learner to develop a deeper understanding of Chemistry. The units covered are:

Chemical change and structure

Chemistry in society

Nature's Chemistry

Researching chemistry

Advanced Higher Chemistry

The relevance of chemistry is highlighted by the study of the applications of chemistry in everyday contexts. The purpose of the Course is to build on the knowledge, understanding and skills developed by the learner in Higher Chemistry and to provide a useful bridge towards further study of chemistry.  The units covered are:

Inorganic and Physical Chemistry

Organic Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis

Researching Chemistry
